From Western New York to the Finger Lakes, as the breeze begins to turn crisp and the first fall leaves hit the ground, your spa becomes the perfect retreat—if it’s ready. Prepping your hot tub before temperatures dip helps protect equipment, improve water quality, and keep energy costs in check all season long. Use this guide to winterize your Rochester, NY spa (without sacrificing those cozy, steamy nights).

1) Start With a Deep Clean & Water Refresh

  • Purge the plumbing: Run a spa line cleaner to remove hidden biofilm in the pipes.
  • Drain completely: Turn off the power at the breaker, connect the drain, and empty the tub. Use a wet/dry vac to clear any standing water from seats and footwells.
  • Wipe it down: Clean the shell with a non-abrasive spa cleaner; rinse thoroughly to avoid foaming.
  • Refill with fresh water: Rochester’s hard water can cause high levels of calcium; use a pre-filter on your hose if possible.
  • Balance Chemistry for Cold-Weather Stability: Cold temps slow down chemical reactions, so balance matters even more.

2) Refresh or Replace Filters

Do a deep clean of the filters by soaking them in a dedicated filter cleaner, and rinse thoroughly. Take a look at the media and end caps– if pleats are frayed or the filter still looks dingy after soaking, replace it.

3) Inspect the Cover

A tight, well-insulated cover can save energy and help keep your spa clean.

  • Check for heaviness or sagging
  • Examine hinges and straps
  • Ensure its seal
  • Protect the vinyl

4) Optimize for Energy Efficiency

  • Set a steady temperature: Avoid big swings; it’s cheaper to maintain than to re-heat from a low set point.
  • Use an insulated floating blanket: It reduces heat loss and evaporation under the main cover.
  • Block the wind: Privacy panels or landscaping can cut wind chill around the spa area.

If You Plan to Shut Down for Winter

Rochester winters can be tough. If you won’t use your spa for 6–12 weeks, consider a professional winterization.

DIY closings often miss hidden water traps—one freeze can crack a manifold or pump housing. We’re happy to handle this start-to-finish.
